Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

Last | Thumbnails ![]() This is after the old flooring was removed and the concrete subfloor has been cleaned. We'll now use our Crain undercut saw to remove a section from the bottom of the hearth. We use the thickness of the new wood floor and add the thickness of what we believe will be the adhesive bed and normally add 30 mils for the thickness of the urethane vapor barrier. We want to cut a bit more than the actual net thickness dimensions as to reproduce a grout line on the bottom of the travertine riser that matches the thickness of the grout line on the top of the travertine riser.
