Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

We use felt paper and cut it to the exact width of the flooring. It's laid in place adjacent to the flooring that has been affixed and up against the hearth and cut to create a template. We want to pay careful attention to the fact that we have a half-inch of tile coverage so our hardwood floor is covered by the tile and also leave an expansion space from the concrete hearth that serves as the sub-surface for the tile. Optimally, that would be half-way or one-quarter inch under the edge of the tile.
