Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

This fireplace hearth is curved on both sides and basically
straight every where else. This was an uncomplicated undercut task due to the
hearth's consistency in shape and material. Two cuts were required, one at the
top height of the laminate floor (which I believe was the Columbia glueless-clic
brand), and one cut flush with the concrete subfloor. The cut material is then
chipped out to a depth of about one-half inch.
