Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring
When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

This is a front close-up view of the concrete fireplace hearth. Notice the steel chain curtain that covers the fire-box at the top of the picture. This close-up also shows that the face of the hearth isn't totally straight. It has some minor undulations but nothing that would cause complications while undercutting.
