When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

A view from the left side of the concrete fireplace hearth
along the entire front face. It's quite long as hearths go, about eight feet,
and built in a slightly irregular adobe style as is fairly popular in Arizona
and the southwestern part of the United States in general.
