When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

A view from the right side of the concrete adobe-style, fireplace hearth. The floating laminate planks were installed in a front to back direction in the home but in the room itself the lengths of the planks are installed in the shorter direction on purpose running into the fireplace to emphasize it as the room's focal point.
