When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

On the opposite side of the stone hearth displayed in the previous picture is this stone wall in the master bedroom. Using the same ledge type design, the builder held the stone off the sub-floor anticipating the thickness of the new hickory hardwood floor.
