Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

Here you see my partner getting ready to fit a three plank wide section of flooring in place. Notice the irregular cut on the top of the section where it will fit to the hearth. When the material lays out in the room where a hearth, or any obstacle for that matter falls in the width its much more difficult to set
large pieces in place as opposed to the length where each individual plank end can be scribed and placed one by one.
You'll see that later when a plastic wood laminate is finished to a concrete
hearth.
