Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

We have made sure to leave the required expansion space between the floor and stone fire place hearth. This will allow the floor breathing room, if you will; expand and contract, shrink and swell. Whatever terminology you use the wood is allowed to move as it was designed without any ill effects.
