Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring
When finishing to fireplace hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to undercut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

This is a view of the left front corner of the stone fireplace hearth. Notice that in some instances the mortar was set quite deep on the bottom. There are places where only mortar was undercut and no stone at all.
