Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring
When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

This is a step-back view of the entire hearth. When inspecting flooring work the most common and accepted method to do so is from a standing position. If imperfections aren't apparent from a standing position at various angles and lighting conditions then that floor would be considered acceptable.
