Undercutting Fireplace Hearths for Flooring
When finishing to fire-place hearths, stone walls and other irregular shaped obstacles with a hard surface floor, the best way to achieve a clean good-looking finish is to under-cut or remove a shallow, narrow section of material from the bottom.

This is a curved concrete hearth and concrete adobe style fireplace. The hearth is covered with a travertine marble tile on the top and face or riser. Carpet is on the floor now in the living room and is secured against the hearth using tackless strip. We're going to be removing the carpet and replacing it with an engineered hardwood, domestic hickory species directly adhered to the concrete slab. First we'll be cleaning the slab of all contaminants, sealing it to protect the wood from migrating moisture vapor and undercutting the hearth to receive the new hard surface flooring.
